Sanitary Disposal
FEMININE/ SANITARY WASTE IN THE WORKPLACE
Regulation 21 of the Approved Code of Practice, in the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, advises that:
"in the case of water closets used by women, suitable meansshould be provided for the disposal of sanitary dressings "
“no items should be flushed that could cause a blockage within a drain or sewer”.
Legislation in this area has been introduced to protect both employees and the environment. It applies to all businesses even if they only have one female employee.
Businesses not providing adequate washroom facilities and sanitary disposal for their employees could be prosecuted. They are also required under the Environment Act to dispose of all waste properly and failing to do this could also lead to prosecution.
Sanitary waste is classified as Offensive waste and should not be flushed or put in to the general waste stream.
A santary bin is the most hygienic and sensible way to dispose of sanitary towels and pads. By using a bin you are also reducing the chances of getting a blocked pipe in the toilet system which will not only cost monet to sort out but render a cubicle out of use.
